Project description
Innovative lignocellulose biorefinery technology
Lignocellulose – plant dry matter (biomass) – is the most abundant raw material available on Earth for the production of biofuels. The EU-funded FRACTION project will develop a flexible lignocellulosic biorefinery concept. It will adapt the production process to a wider range of raw materials, market demand, fluctuating economics, and resolving separation and purification processes. The processing of lignocellulosic feedstocks relies on an organosolv fractionation process that allows operating with high-biomass loading, mild operation conditions, eliminating separation steps and offering extra feedstock flexibility in the plant. FRACTION will also develop innovative downstream conversion technologies for the synthesis and validation of new building blocks. The results will improve bio-based products and environmental performance and reduce separation costs.
