On the chemical origins of biological metabolism

Project description

A metabolism-guided approach to prebiotic chemistry

Until now, chemical experiments to understand the origin of life have mostly focused on the beginnings of genetics. The ERC-funded MetabolismOrigins project will look at something different. It will study how biological metabolism arose from geochemical reaction networks, before enzymes or life itself, and created the molecules of genetics in the process. MetabolismOrigins will explore how much of core biological metabolism might have emerged without enzymes, and whether it could have given rise to genetics. Specifically, the research will identify conditions that would trigger the spontaneous emergence of metal-catalysed versions of the biosynthetic pathways for sugar, amino acid and ribonucleotide synthesis. The findings will shed light on how and why life’s biochemistry emerged.
