Project description
Developing new high-voltage solid-state transformers devices
In recent years, solid-state transformers (SSTs) have gained popularity, emerging as a disruptive technology that can extend the typical functionalities of a regular transformer. They can optimise the power flows and introduce a high degree of digitalisation and intelligence in the network. However, their use is limited to low-voltage applications. In this context, the EU-funded SSTAR project will increase the operation voltage level of SSTs. This will enlarge their applications within the energy power sector and improve performance in a reliable, cost-optimised and sustainable way. The project will develop a bio-based dielectric fluid able to increase the SST modules’ insulation voltage while achieving up to 50 % CO2 saving compared to traditional oils.
