A major leap forward for prosthetic limbs

There have been significant advances in technology used for prosthetic limbs – from 3D printing to digital design tools. The EU-funded WISH project will develop a device it calls Wearable Integrated Soft Haptic (WISH). This is for upper and lower limb prostheses and can exert pressures in multiple specific stump sites. It is composed of soft silicone chambers along with their actuation and control units. The project expects to achieve good modality matching and somatotopic matching while keeping it non-invasive and practicable. The purpose of this European Research Council initiative is to transform WISH into a technology platform supporting different devices for different types of prostheses. No other haptic display technology for prosthesis users has ever reached such maturity.
