Project description
Facilitating permafrost studies using Earth observation
The effects of climate change in the Arctic are visible. The oldest and thickest ice in the Arctic has declined by 95 % since 1985. While ground observations are essential, permafrost information is difficult to obtain. Advances in Earth observation (EO) sensors, cloud computing, geographical information systems and the field of socioeconomics provide unique opportunities to promote research and socioeconomic studies in the Arctic. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the EO-PERSIST project will propose the development of a single cloud-based system to collect, manage and facilitate the exploitation of available EO data suitable to permafrost studies. The work will be undertaken by an intersectoral research team of five academic and five industrial partners from Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Romania, Finland and Sweden.
