Demonstration plant for steam gasification of PVC rich plastic waste

Obiettivo

Conversion of waste PVC, unsuitable for mechanical recycling, by a steam gasification process in HCl and synthesis gas or hydrocarbons with energy recovery.
HCl will be re-used for vinylchloride/PVC production.
Hydrocarbons/synthesis gas is usable as feedstock.

Landfill of plastic waste will be restricted in the future. Techniques have been developed for mechanical or chemical recycle of plastics. PVC in plastic waste is problematic because of the corrosive character of the HCl formed.

PVC can be partly recycled. For a large portion however other techniques have to be applied. PVC can be incinerated in municipal waste incinerators or mono combustion units.

Both have the drawback of low energy and material recovery. The proposed technology, steam gasification, will result in HCl immediately re-usable to produce vinylchloride monomer and synthesis gas or hydrocarbons usable as feedstock for other products or a gas turbine-generator.

Via this technology both the chlorine chain and carbon chain are optimally closed resulting in sustainability.
