Cel The promotion and demonstration of effective agricultural waste and organic manure management systems and practices on the farm and the creation of awareness and understanding of the need of such systems and practices within the farming community in order to reduce the potentially damaging impact of agriculture on nature and the environment. The project will be based at an SAC farm with 350 dairy cows plus young stock in a high rainfall area. The farm has a wide range of slurry: silage effluent and contaminated water systems which will be adopted where necessary and monitored in detail. The various systems will form the basis of demonstrations, training courses and exhibits of technical events and the production of technical literature in 3 EU languages. The target group will be widely distributed throughout the rural community including farm workers, farmers, agricultural trade, consultants, advisers and policy makers. Inter-disciplinary advisory models will be developed and distributed. The models will demonstrate the economic and political advantages and/or limitations of various management systems and agricultural practices. The project will be co-ordinated by staff of SAC Grassland and Ruminant Science Department but use will be made of appropriate disciplines within the organisation.
