The 'Heritage' Project

Objetivo

To create a practical model of sustainable tourism. The model and an associated tourist interpretation centre will demonstrate how innovative environmental concepts can offer benefits and how the natural resources of a region can be managed in a sustainable fashion against heavy tourist pressures.

The project will create a model of sustainable development and a practical demonstration of effective partnerships, working to harness environmental innovations to produce real solutions which are widely applicable.

The main phases of the project are:
1) To create a living model of the Tees Valley and the River Tees. The model will carefully recreate the diverse range of habitats and features including Mountain, High Moor, Upland Meadow, Reedbeds, Saltmarsh and Sand Dunes.
2) To demonstrate how environmental innovations can address the problems and pressures of tourism in such a region.
3) To develop a futuristic eco-structure to serve as an interpretative centre for the project.
The structure will demonstrate how innovative planning, design and technology can improve sustainability.
4) To analyse, report and disseminate the results.
It is felt that the results will be widely relevant and applicable in many other parts of the community.

We have an ideal site and the infrastructure is well developed. Most of the planning is in place to allow the project to progress fairly rapidly if funding is secured. The project has very strong support and interest from a wide range of companies, organisations and individuals.
