The riverside transit. Newcastle upon Tyne

Objective

To provide an Automatic Guidance Bus System to relieve increasing traffic congestion and pollution in the key regional growth point of Newcastle Riverside.

New developments at Newcastle Riverside will generate 8000 person trips to the area daily. The constricted roads in this historic urban environment are already severely congested.

The Automatic Guidance Bus System will provide a public transport solution which will not require any major demolitions, unlike conventional rapid transit systems. The buses will be guided by submerged electronic cables and will be able to operate safely in tight spaces and in pedestrian areas thus avoiding traffic congestion.

The system will operate on route of 4.8 km of mixed on highway and off highway nature.

This is an innovative project and the first of its kind in Europe. Yet the technology is well researched in Gemany and in use in the Channel Tunnel (Service tunnel). It has great potential for transfer to other community cities with congested and polluted historic environments.

The project will make a major contribution to EC air pollution reduction objectives as incorporated in the Fifth Environment Action Programme. It will use clean technology itself but the main gain will be in the replacement of fossil fuel burning motor vehicles.
