Conservation and wise use of wetlands in the mediterranean basin

Objetivo

The project aims to prevent the loss and degradation of Mediterranean wetlands, by extending the conservation tools developed under existing EC project No 3907 MedWet to non-EU Mediterranean states, by testing them at pilot sites, by concentrating on economic values of wetlands, and by preparing a funding request for application of the methodologies.

EC Project No 3907, MedWet, is being carried out in the European Union member states of the Mediterranean by the conservation authorities of Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece, in partnership with the Ramsar Bureau, Tour du Valet Biological Station, IWRB, WWF-International and the greek Wetland Centre. Its aim is to stop and reverse the loss and degradation of Mediterranean wetlands by developing standard methodologies applicable to the Mediterranean in five fields: wetland inventories and monitoring; wetland management; improvement of wetland education and training; public awareness; and effective use of research results. Particular attention is given to training. At a MedWet meeting in November 1993, observers from non-EU Mediterranean states (many of them already Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention), agreed that the MedWet project be extended to these Mediterranean states in order to provide the technical assistance needed for the establishment of environmental policies and action programmes. They requested the Ramsar Bureau to complete the concept by reaction of a new field - economic values of wetlands. The Ramsar Bureau has coordinated preparation of a project along these lines, which is formally supported by the governments of Albania, Croatia. Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. The project also includes field testing of the methodologies in non-EU Mediterranean states, and preparation of a request to funding bodies for application throughout the region.
