DEMO PROJECT FOR AN ALL GAS HIGH EFFICIENT GAS BOILER WITH LOW CO + NOX EMISSION

Objetivo

To demonstrate a gas burner control system to improve burner efficiency and reduce emissions of CO and NOx.
The innovative aspect is the use of a novel redox-sensor for control of the burner.
Phase 1 : After designing the appliance, the first boiler has been constructed and tested. The parts of the body of the boilers are produced, and all the parts are yet on stock. Demo appliance -01 is installed at Deglas in Apeldoorn. It is now continueously working.
Phase 2 : The IMC 525-01 burner controller is developed, and produced, and tested. We are working with it now on appliance -01, and writing and testing the programm.
Phase 3 : The lifetime test (Novem-Project) of the LS-01 sensor has ended now, with positiv results. The appliances were assembled, tested and installed in the dwellings, so the demonstration test is started in dec '96.
Phase 4 : Now the appliances are functioning in the dwellings. There were a few problems to solve with 3 appliances. Since February '97 all appliances are working properly. Monitoring happens by Dalgas and GGR. Also 2 appliances are tested by Ruhrgas every 6 weeks.
In the period May '97 Dec '97 :
- some problems were solved. All of them were caused by the way of manufacturing this demo appliances in a little series by hand (electric wiring was defect, an ignition plug did not work properly, burnermaterial was not well fixed, etc.)
- Measurements as well by GGR as Ruhrgas had very positiv results : CO- and NOx emission were lower than foresaid at excess-air of 1.10. Efficiency was as expected.
- all the appliances (minus one, that has hydronic leakedge in the heat echanger) are now in function, without any technical troubles.
- Since February'97 a life-timetest of the LS-01 sensor is on-going at Ruhrgas in Dorsten, still with very positive results. Also a LS-01 sensor is tested since June '97 at GWI in Essen. There are also no problems. There is prepared a Craft project with several manufacturers, on which GWI (Essen) and Daglas will be the R&D Performers. We also are contacted by a manufacturer of gas appliances, who will start with engineering of this demo appliance. So it will be marketed at the end of 1998.
In this project a new appliance concept for a high efficient gas boiler and the control device for that will be developed and constructed. After testing period the 25 appliances with the control devices will be installed in dwellings and monitored for efficiency and emissions of CO and NOx.
The appliance has so called top down burner with a ceramic burner plate. Gas and air are completely pre-mixed.
The air gas mixture is, by means of a fan and a gas yet, very well mixed. By variation of the fan speed the excess air can be set-up very exact.
By means of the sensor (fixed 6 mm under the top-down burner plate) and the digital control device, the excess-air can be hold constant at n= 1.10. The emission of CO = 30 ppm and NOx= 15 ppm (n=1) is constant.
The quality of the combustion will be established on this high performance, regardless dynamic influences at the air inlet, at the exhaust pipe, by gas load or varieing gas quality.
