Objectif * To use fibre glass as a material for the scroll casing, fixed guide vanes and draft tube for a low head Kaplan turbine.* To refurbish an abandoned small hydro scheme to increase annual energy output from 0.5 GWh to 1.5 GWh.* To use a siphon intake system as a means of flow control to preserve the facade of the building.* To provide energy for a major tourist complex.* To demonstrate the use of an electric fish barrier.The proposal is for the refurbishment of an abandoned small hydro station on the River Lee in Cork city. The gross head varies between 1.2 m and 2.4 m due to tibal influences. The maximum flow is 20 cumecs.The new development involves the removal of the existing Francis turbines and the installation of two vertical axis half Kaplans. The maximum electrical output power will be 340 kW. The Kaplans will be installed with a siphon arrangment for on/off control.The innovations are :(i) To install a siphon system to preserve the facade of the building(ii) To form the complex scroll casing fixed guide vanes and draft tube in GRP.(iii) To install an electric fish barrier(iv) To provide energy for a nearby property development.
