MULTI-USE GEOTHERMAL PROJECT AT SAO PEDRO DO SUL, CENTRAL PORTUGAL

Objective

To demonstrate that S. Pedro do Sul Geothermal Field can support significant low enthalpy geothermal resources in a cascade multi-use scheme. Main consumers will be local hotels and greenhouses. The cooled geothermal fluid will be used in balneotherapy.
Fluid temperature of the discharging well is 67°C and TDS about 350mg/l so the geothermal fluid is identical to the former existing mineral water. Natural discharging production of the new geothermal well is 12 l/s and exploitation yield will be 14 l/s, according to the pumping tests.
The existing "old fashioned" single spring arrangement delivers 9 1/s, at 68°C but it lacks flexibility and capacity for the envisaged exploitation needs.
So, according to the existing project an evaluation production well up to 500 m has been drilled in fractured granites. The site has been selected after a detailed investigation that included geological mapping, gravimetry, radiometry, geoelectric profiling and radon measurements. The reservoir temperature at 500 m is 68°C. The overall geothermal exploitation will be based in the AC1 well exploited at 14 l/s. However, the geothermal well has been tested for three days at a rate of 27 l/s with a constant dynamic level at -15m.
Following the completion of the well, a district heating system will be installed, the cooled water being used, afterwards, for balneotherapy.
