USE OF AGRICULTURAL WASTE INSTEAD OF PETROLEUM IN A LIME KILN

Cel

The use of agricultural waste to the Greek lime industries, in order to achieve energy saving, reduction of the production cost, improvement of the products competitiveness and reduction of the pollution of the ground and underground due to the agricultural waste. Also to achieve energy saving from the recycling of exhaust gases by using them directly to the burners and for heating the fresh air through a heat exchanger of special construction.
The installation is operating in good conditions from the start and after the elimination of the encountered problems, the running situation was improved. Today the kiln is working by using 100% biomass and the consumption per Kg of the product (CaO) is reduced very much.
The quality of the product was improved very much and with the new installations and the better control of the feeding systems and the granulometry of the biomass is not coming out any dust with the product. Quick lime is coming out very clean.
At start of the kiln the consumption of biomass was very high: 3 Kg CaO with 1 Kg biomass. After the first months of the trial period, the consumption was reduced to 3,5 kg CaO with 1 kg biomass. The theoretical consumption is about 3,6 Kg CaO/Kg biomass with calorific value of the biomass at 4.000 Kcal/Kg and relative consumption of the kiln at 1.100 Kcal/Kg of CaO.
4.000 Kcal/Kg biomass

1.100 Kcal/Kg CaO
The project is finished with the final phase (trial period on 30.11.94). With exception of a delay due to the changing of the cocontractor, all the phases followed the initial project timetable. The first phase initiated at September 91 and it was finished after 12 months. In this period the study and drawings for the lime kiln were completed. The second phase was executed at the contractor's factory, with the adjusted study and drawings for the installation making the necessary modifications and taking in consideration the new parameters. In the second phase all the constructions and some installations works were completed and the new machinery was acquired and manufactured. At the third phase, which started January 93, were executed all the erection works and installation of the new machinery. The erection phase was finished about December 94, having a delay due to the market situation in Greece (lime request decreased). At the last phase of the project, which started in January94 the final interventions and some modifications were executed before to start fire in the kiln. The kiln was fired in April 94 with a baking diagram for 20 days, for the protection of the refractory material. Slowly and with continuous supervision, the production was increased and reached in June at the full production of about 70 Ton/day, using biomass at 100%.
