INNOVATIVE CEMENT PLANT UTILIZING WASTE HEAT FOR PRODUCTION OF ELECTRIC POWER

Objectif

The aim of this project is to recover waste heat in Ruedersdorf new 5,000 tpd cement line. In the present configuration the gases from clinker cooler and kiln bypass are exhausted to the atmosphere. The heat content of these gases together with tertiary air will be used for steam generation in waste heat boiler from where the preconditioned steam will enter turbine island for electric power generation.
A total of 22 MWe will be produced through the combination of the heat recovery of the clinker and the steam production in a solid fuels boiler, which could burn either brown coal or timber waste.
The project's main objective is to demonstrate to the cement industry that it is technically and economically feasible to generate electricity and reduce emissions. This reference plant will serve as an ideal base for further dissemination of the technology within the EC cement industry.L%
The design phase started in January 95. 5 possible constructions are already calculated. An optimation of these 5 constructions was done in the second half-year of 1995. The manufacturing will start in April 1996.
INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
Through the application of novel clinker cooler technology the temperature in cooler exit gas is high enough to justify waste heat recovery with electricity generation. Another unique feature of this cement line is the use of circulation fluidized bed gasifier for generation of lean gas which is used for firing of calcinator. This opens the possibility of using municipal and other waste as alternative fuel in an environmentally accepable and waste free fashion.
The use of circulating fluid bed gasifier allows an partial use of tertiary air which together with bypass gas can be used for waste heat recovery in addition to the clinker cooler gas. To reduce the heat losses the gas streams on the way to the waste heat boiler are only partially dedusted in a cyclone. This exposes the waste heat boiler to very aggressive environment.
The acceptable economy of electricity production is accompished by the auxiliary use of the solid fuels boiler. The auxiliary burningallows higher thermal efficiency than in other WHR systems so that more energy is recovered from the waste heat gases.
THE CONTEXT IN WHICH THE TECHNOLOGY IS OPERATING
Innovative cement plant utilising waste heat for production of electric power.
ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF THE TECHNOLOGY I.E. OVERCOST COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL EQUIPMENT COST OF ENERGY PRODUCED IF APPROPRIATE
E1 : Total in electric power cost per year :
18 MWel x 7,200 k/year x 130 DM/MWh = 16,876,000 DM/year
E2 : Total saving by using waste is :
67,500 Gcal/year x 15 DM/Gcal(coal) + 10 DM/t disposal x 19,285/year
= 1,205,300 DM/year
E = E1 + E2 = 16,876,000 + 1,205,300 = 18,081,300 DM/year
