Gravitational Optics and Cosmology

Objectif

The objective of the network is to use gravitational optics in order to obtain new results of cosmological significance in four main areas:- the study of primeval galaxies;- the mapping of dark matter in different scales;the determination of global cosmological parameters;- the investigation of the structure of quasars.
Gravitational optics have been used in order to obtain new results of cosmological significance in 4 main areas: the study of primeval galaxies; the mapping of dark matter in different scales; the determination of global cosmological parameters; the investigation of the structure of quasars. A search for luminous arcs in rich clusters of galaxies, as well as the detailed modelling of the mass distribution in a few clusters, have shown that the dark matter is more concentrated in the core than in galaxies or X-rays. The analysis of the Lyman-alpha absorption lines in the spectra of the 2 images of a newly discovered gravitationally lensed quasar has allowed a lower limit of 50 kpc on the size of the lyman-alpha clouds. The photometric monitoring of 4 multiply imaged quasars has been analysed and shown evidence of microlensing effects. The redshift of the lensing galaxy in 2 more multiple image systems has been measured.
