A multinational, multidisciplinary research programme on the role and the place of the mountains in the desertification of the Mediterranean mountain regions

Objectif

The proposal is an addition to the existing MEDIMONT project, to include scientists from Bulgaria, Albania and Slovenia.
MEDIMONT is a multi-national multi-disciplinary research programme, on the role and the place of the mediterranean mountains in the desertification prooess of the Mediterranean regions, selected for support by the EC-DG XI within the frame of the Environment R&D programme.
The objective of MEDIMONT is to better understand the desertification process of Mediterranean mountains under various natural and human conditions, and to deliver recommendations for an appropriate management of these environments. Investigations are planned at the local-scale, in five selected pilot-zones in Andalucia, Corsica, Basilicata, Calabria and Crete, and at the regional-scale level, to extrapolate and give an overview of local results.
The objective of MEDIMONT-PECO is to complete and enrich the regional dimension of MEDIMONT, by including new pilot-zones in Bulgaria, Albania and Slovenia.
As for the initial MEDIMONT project a multi-disciplinary approach is planned for each of these new pilot-zones, including social sciences, terrestrial and continental water ecology, under the local coordination of :
- the Institute of Ecology of the Academy of Sciences, Sofia for Bulgaria, - the National Hydrometeorological Institute of the Academy of Sciences, Tirana for Albania,
- the Water Management Institute of Ljubljana for Slovenia.
ICALPE is in charge of the overall scientific and administrative coordination of both MEDIMONT and MEDIMONT-PECO, with the aim of keeping the same course and consistency to the whole joint programme.
