Monitoring fatigue loads on wind turbines using cycle counting data acquisition systems

Obiettivo

Answering CEC's invitation to cooperate in the projects of the Community research programmes two Eastern European research organisations filed proposals for contributions in the JOULE 11 project "Monitoring Fatigue Loads on Wind Turbines Using Cycle Counting Data Acquisition Systems" carried out by DEWl(coordinator), CRES and FFA.
Due to their scientific background both proposing Eastern European partners aim at the development and application of advanced load monitoring systems.
Since the reliability of data acquisition systems in harsh environmental conditions is still a problem the Research Institute for Informatics Bucharest, Romania, suggests to develop a system featuring data transfer via wireless fieldbus.
This is intended to eleminate electromagnetic interference problems as they have occured in the original project due to electrical discharges or lightning strokes.
Within the scope of the proposed work the appropriate transmission technique will be chosen and a prototype system will be developed, implemented and tested.
Energovyzkum Ltd, Czech Republic, has developed and installed diagnostic systems for load and fatigue monitoring in nuclear power plants. Their proposed contribution focusses at the application of this system at a 75kW wind turbine near Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic and adds the investigation of terrain roughness on the fatigue characteristics of the tower loads.
Furthermore Energovyzkum Ltd. intends to set up a scheme for on-line temperature compensation of the strain gage measurements using temperature sensors.
The two proposed contributions will thus complement the original project in the fields of data acquisition system development and fatigue data assessment.
In the course of the additional proposals an extensiv exchange of experiences, data and evaluation results wil take place in order to benefit the original project and the research work performed by the Eastern European partners.
