Objective This proposal aims to enhance the work of the Medium Term Climate Variability project by the following contributions from the Eastern European countries of Bulgaria and Romania: Participant 10 will seek to improve understanding of the role of air-sea interaction for water mass formation, in particular as a result of oceanic convection, and the consequences for variability on the inter-annual timescale. This will be done via modelling studies with the Bryan-Cox GCM (which is also being used within the project by the UKMO) Simulations will be carried out for the region of the Black Sea, but will have wider relevance- to water mass formation in the global ocean. This work will provide feedback for the coupled model integrations of the UKMO and other participants in the project. Participants 11 and 12 will carry out improved analyses of the atmospheric and oceanic meridional heat transport and will use these to calibrate hydrodynaical climate models for climate variability studies. Participant 13 will contribute to the project by additional analyses of data from simulations carried out over the decade of the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison project (AMIP). particular attention will be given to analysis of climate variability over the European area. The Medium Term Climate Variability project already has the participation of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology within Romania. The additional participation of participant 13, also from Romania, and the joint participation of participants 10, 11 and 13 from Bulgaria will help to strengthen links within these countries, as well as with the participants from western European countries involved in the project, in the area of climate research.
