Objectif The main purpose is to give the chance to partners from Eastern and Central Europe to join the Multichess 2 projects. The purpose of Multichess 2 is explained in what follows High efficiency together with low cost of the solar cell module are the 2 important requirements for the breakthrought of photovoltaics. Of course efficiency also indirectly contributes to the overall systems cost, because of the balance-of-system costs (BOS). The higher the BOS-costs, the more important the role of the efficiency becomes. The efficiency and cost of the solar cell module are sometimes conflicting parameters, because cheaper techniques of fabrication usually lead to lower efficiencies. The purpose of this project is to develop a good compromise between low cost and high efficiency for polycristalline ingottype silicon solar cells. On one hand high efficienc laboratory cells will be made, using microelectronic technologies to assess the limit intrinsic possibilities. On the other hand a trade-off with cost will be done using for some steps more industrially oriented technologies. The project goals are: * a best (lab) efficiency of 16-16.5 % on 10X10 cm2 * an "industrial efficiency" of 15-15.5 % on 10X10 cm2 * the direct cost goal is < 1.25 ECU/Wp The efficiency goals are visualized throughout the different multichess projects, including this extension, as shown on the Fig.2 , in terms of goals and obtained results. A lot of attention will also be paid to the quality of the ingot material. Studies will be done to understand the difference in gettering mechanism on the different multicrystalline materials under study. In other words: the relation between structural, compositional and electrical properties of the substrate material and in function of the production step history will be clarified further.
