Dosimetry of beta and low-energy photon radiations

Objetivo



Five new proposals for research work in dosimetry of beta and low-energy photon radiations have been selected from a total of 12 proposals received. The proposals are listed below in order of priority.

Proposal 01: Institute of Nuclear Physics, Krakow, Poland, contributes with further developments of the ultra-sensitive TL phosphor LiF: Mg,Cu,P for dosimetry of beta and low-energy photon radiations.
The project comprise optimisation of the general properties of the material, construction of effectively thin detectors for skin dosimetry and study of LET effects for irradiation with beta and low-energy photons.
Proposal 02: Institute of Isotopes, Budapest, Hungary, contributes with further developments and refinements of the TLD and TSEE techniques for dosimetry of low-penetrating radiations.
The work comprise optimisation of dosimetric as well as handling parameters of the detectors.
The construction of combined TLD/TSEE sandwich type dosemeters provides special possibilities for analysing radiation fields from low-penetrating radiations.

Proposal 03: Soltan Institute for Nuclear Studies, Otwock, Swierk, Poland contributes to the project with Monte Carlo calculations using a universally applicable code, GEANT3. The code will be used for solving a number of dosimetric problems involved in dosemetry of beta and lowenergy photon radiations.
The project fits well into the existing project and gives possibilities for intercomparing the GEANT3 code with the EGS4 code applied by AEA Technology, Harwell in this project.

Proposal 04: Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, Riga, Latvia, has experience in the development of semiconductor silicon diode detectors for alpha and beta radiations.
The project is aimed at further development of silicon diode structures for dosimetry and spectrometry of weakly penetrating radiations.
Proposal 05: Institute of Physics, Latvia Academy of Sciences, Riga, Latvia, has studied photostimulated luminescence (PSL) characteristics of alkali halid crystals irradiated with W and X-ray radiation. The project contributes with further study of this technique for application for beta dosimetry.
