Mitigation of hazardous releases by fluid curtains engineering predictive model validation by wind tunnel experiments

Objective



The present proposal constitutes the extension of the research proposal funded by the CEC in the field of hazardous gas mitigation by fluid curtains. The previous work has led to a model of the hydrodynamic, thermal and physico-chemical actions of a single spray on a gas cloud. This model has been validated by producing experimental data. The present proposal extends a specific point of the general proposal.
Enhancement of the fluid curtain efficiency requires a strategy for Selection of appropriate chemical additives. An experimental determination of the hydrodynamics and kinetics data for different gas-liquid binaries is proposed.
A sphere absorber has been constructed and validated with classical gas-liquid binaries presenting known kinetics. The same apparatus is being used to obtain absorption kinetics of different toxic gases. We propose the following steps for our research :
1/ gathering all the existing data on toxic gases absorption 2/ constructing a robust finite element algorithm for design purposes (modeling and simulation). This code will allow to solve non-linear hydrodynamics and mass balance equations and therefore lead to the kinetic parameters more efficiently than the actual one.
The outcome of this research will consist in a code to be inserted in the general design code.
