Cel This proposal seeks to extend both the geographical scope and scientific content of the EC-supported ALPE programme, particularly its Eastern component. The role of the two existing participant laboratories is expanded and two new groups from Bratislava and Ljubljana will be brought into ALPE. ALPE methods will be applied to assess the ecologica] status and degree of atmospheric contamination in The Tatra Mountains of Slovakia and Poland, one of the most polluted high mountain areas in Europe, yet an area where relatively little is known about the current extent, causes and historical development of such pollution. Key sites in the Tatras will be subjected to a full range of biological, chemical and palaeolimnological analyses, and a series of other sites will be less inten sively studied, with a view in particular to determining critical loads. Similar objectives are defined for the Julian Alps in Slovenia, an area of moderate-high atmos pheric deposition but an area of much lower geological sensitivity than most in the ALPE programme, where again, little is known of the current extent and historical development of such pollution and its effects on surface waters. In addition to extending the ALPE programme geographically, the primary ALPE objective of 'developing a sophisticated environmental calibration data-set as a means of assessing water quality status (and historical change) and to develop guidelines for future good monitioring and management practice' will be greatly enhanced through the extension of the data-set. By incorporating specific expertise from the East European participants the total number of environmental variables considered throughout the whole programme will be increased. It is anticipated that significant benefits will also accrue to the participating laboratories through their involvement in a programme which stresses stringent quality control and harmonisation of chemical and biological survey and analytical methods. The upgrade of key laboratory and computing equipment will be facilitated and will greatly enhance the ability of these laboratories to participate in this and future independent programmes of research.
