Wecs offshore demonstration

Objetivo

Quite a few of islands in Estonia having been inhabited and having even some industrial potential are not connected to the main grid. At the same time the wind energy potential on these islands is good and the annual average wind speed is more than 6 m/sec. As the cost of electric energy produced by diesel generators on these islands is very high then the wind energy application on these islands is economically justified. To get long time experimental data about the joint performance of wind turbine in conjunction with diesel engine a demonstration and test stand-alone wind turbine is needed to Work out a model electric supply for small islands in the Baltic Sea area not connected to the main electric grid. For this project we chose one of our islands near Tallinn - Prangli is a very convenient place for a demonstration project for the island lies only about 25 km from the centre of Tallinn. The annual average wind speed is 7 m/sec. To date the electricity for prangli has been produced by 3 diesel generators, having each the 60 kW output power. The cost of electricity by these diesel engines is 0.12 USD/kwh, which is ten times as much as the conventional electric power in Estonia. Considering the future prospective of providing the island with energy, a turbine with the rated power of about 250 kw should be needed. Half of the expences of the project could be covered by the Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry.
