Ultrafast processes in semi-conductors

Objetivo

The study of ultrafast dynamics of electrons in semiconductors is one of the most exciting and rapidly developing fields in condensed matter physics. Femtosecond optical techniques have developed to the stage where direct observation of the fundamental interactions is now possible, and detailed studies are currently in progress. The field is also changing rapidly due to the remarkable progress in epitaxial growth of semiconductors which has made available high-quality heterostructures such as quantum wells, wires, and superlattices. This has opened up a wide range of fundamentally new phenomena for investigation. This research field is also of strategic technological importance because of its potential for applications in high-speed electronics and opto-electronics. The extension of the Network to include participants from C.E.E.C. will strengthen and extend the programme. In particular, there will be important additions in the areas of II-VI semiconductors and organic semiconductors based on C60. The former are important for potential applications in short wavelength semiconductor lasers, and also in colour displays. The latter have important magnetic and superconducting properties, in addition to being semiconductors.
Of major consideration in the organisation of the Network is the training of young scientists, and the transfer of knowledge and techniques within the Community. The close collaboration between the different experimental groups and theory groups is seen as a crucial advantage arising from the formation of the Network. Furthermore, the addition of C.E.E.C. participants will enhance the range of expertise available, and will be of significant benefit to all participants. The proposed C.E.E.C. participants already have established links with the Coordinator and with each other; this will enable a smooth and efficient operation of the expanded Network.
