Obiettivo The aim of the project is to solve the problem of wave evaluation in the Mediterranean Sea, to set the basis for a forecast system, and to organise an archive of wave data for regional seas. In order to provide a wave forecasting service for shipping on the Mediterranean Sea, a phenomenological analysis of the Mediterranean and its main subbarims has been carried out. The main types of storm were identified and the accuracy of input wind fields (from meteorological forecasts) was assessed. An archiving system has been developed to store the large quantity of data involved.Several existing wave forecasting programs were assessed by hindcasting observed storms.A search for records of wave action from countries around the Mediterranean was instigated. Italy and the Spanish coast are well represented, but very few data are available for the African coast or the Aegean Sea, and material from Yugoslavia is currently inaccessible.Wave forecasts are being produced daily, and compared against observed sea conditions. Preliminary results suffice for cell main practical applications.The phases of the project are: 1) implementation of wave models, with different complication and resolution, to the Mediterranean Sea and to various sub-basins; 2) definition of the available wind fields and of their accuracy; 3) definition of the available experimental data; 4) application of data assimilation techniques; 5) study of significative test cases; 6) long-term test for general validation; 7) definition of the requirements for data archiving and real time operation.
