DETERMINATION OF THE DISPERSAL OF RHINE WATER IN THE NORTH SEA AND N.E. ATLANTIC BY MEASUREMENT OF FLUORESCENT XENO-BIOTIC RIVER SUBSTANCES

Objectif

The objectives of this project are: i) to determine the pattern of dispersal of the water from the Rhine and other major rivers on the easternside of the North Sea, including the outflow of the fresh water of the Baltic Sea, into the North Sea and N. E. Atlantic and thus, ii) to collect accurate data for calibration and verification of mathematical transport models on North Sea and N. E. Atlantic scales.
Studies were undertaken with the purpose of:
determining the dispersal in the North Sea of Rhine water and of other major rivers discharging in the North Sea;
providing accurate data for the calibration and verification of mathematical flow and transport models on North Sea (NS) and Continental Shelf (CS) scales;
obtaining calibrated and verified 3-dimensional dynamic models of flows and transports on CS and NS scales.
The basic principle was to make use of the continuous flux of fluorescent xenobiotic river dyes.

A large scale rhodamine wild type (WT) experiment was carried out. The detection method for rhodamines was improved. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) based method has a detection limit of dyes about 5E-12 kg/m{3}. The development of a new detection method for fluorescent dyes based on electrophoresis (CZELIF) was started. First results with the CZELIF method show detection limits of about 5E-14 kg/m{3}.

Simulations of large scale dye experiments with other models showed that dye experiments were necessary tools for the calibration and verification of transport models.
The pattern of dispersal of the water of the Rhine and other relevant rivers will be observed by means of the flux of xenobiotic fluorescent (conservative and photodegradable) substances which are carried along by these rivers. The photolysis of these substances in the sea will be used for determination of ages of river water. The fractions of fresh water of the constituent rivers will be deduced. The extremely low concentrations of the fluorescent substances including rhodamine B and sulpho-rhodamine B will be measured by application of an enrichment technique (solid phase extraction) and separation techniques (High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Capillary zone Electrophorese) followed by laser induced fluorescence detection.
