An integrated model of the food supply system in a region of Zimbabwe

Objetivo

The proposal seeks EC funding to develop an integrated model of the food supply system in a region of Malawi. The overall objective is to optimize the combined nutritional yield from domestic production, strategic reserves and food aid by:

* Rapid assessment of seasonal nutritional requirements by a mix of satellite and ground based sampling/attitudinal surveys.

* Estimation of net yields from domestic production by satellite prediction of harvest performance and analysis of post harvest operations.

* Modelling of the food supply system to simulate the effects of nutritional interventions.

With such an approach, which integrates production, distribution and consumption data, planners will be able to select the most cost-effective foods for nutritional aid, thereby providing a stronger protection mechanism against seasonal food shortages.

The proposal is interdisciplinary, being a study of existing production systems (area I.1.2) combined with research on nutritional interventions at community level (area II.3.2)

It meets the overall objectives of the programme, strengthening the research capacity of the University of Malawi and the partners in Italy, France, England and scotland.

The deliverables from the project will be: a fully documented generic methodology and nutritional model of the food supply system, based on a region of Malawi.
