Obiettivo To investigate the properties and structures of hydroconversion catalysts and the interaction of these factors with activation procedures and process conditions in order to develop improved catalysis for hydroconversion of heavy oils and residues. The project consists of an integrated work programme involving catalyst preparation and characterisation combined with the study of activation procedures and performance testing. The results lead to improved catalyst design for application under defined process conditions. The tasks of the work programme include: 1) Investigation of three catalyst systems: Ni-Mo, phosphorus- promoted Ni-based catalysts, and Fe-based catalysts. The study of the active phase-support interaction to provide a basis for catalyst design and the development of preparation routes. 2) The establishment of pre-treatment procedures using temperature-programmed methods and characterisation techniques. 3) Characterisation of catalysts by a range of analytical techniques on a routine basis and in situ studies applied to selected, promising catalysts. 4) Testing of the activity for the principal reactions involved in hydroconversion, especially HDN and HDM, using appropriate model compounds. 5) Investigation of the performance of selected catalysts with competitive reactions using mixtures of model compounds at realistic process conditions.
