Impacts of agricultural information on resource use sustainability and food safety and measures for its solution in highly-populated subtropical rural areas in China

Objectif

The proposed research is an interdisciplinary study for exploration and improvement of the agricultural environmental condition, resource use sustainability and food safety in highly-populated subtropical rural areas in China, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a progressive growth of agricultural productivity, improving living conditions and health of rural population, and meeting the ever-growing needs to food suplies.
The agricultural growth and foodgrain self-sufficiency in recent years in China have been to a great extent dependent upon the readjustment of agricultural structure and significant increase of external industrial input. At the same time the environmental degradation, ecological damage, water and food pollution, etc. in rural areas with increasing population are becoming major concerns. Solution of these problems is of great improtance in encouraging the continuing growth and sustainable development of agriculture.
The highly-populated Jianghan Plain, located in the middle basin of Yangtze River, is taken as a typical subtropical agricultural area for sampling, testing and demonstration from selected research sites, representing different levels of agricultural hierarchy. Research will be carried out to : (1) investigate the impact of agricultural intensification on sustained productivity, agricultural resource base, biodiversity, rural environmental quality and food safety, described both in present state quantification, and in their temporal and spatial variations; (2) examine the effect of different alternative agrotechniques and production/management systems on controlling ecological and environmental changes and on enhancing the agricultural sustainability; (3) develop and apply information management system based on relevant ecological indicators for monitoring ecological changes and managing agricultural input in a rationalized way.
By completion of this research comprehensive scientific information will be obtained and technical strategy developed for better understanding and resolving the eco-environment problems, determining the agricultural sustainability in subtropical highly-populated rural areas.
Experimental and demonstrative project areas will be built up as examples showing the way to sustainable rural development.
