Obiettivo The general and long term objectives of this project are to provide the basis for evaluating and improving the available genetic base of multipurpose fruit trees for drought prone areas (especially in Southern Africa) with aim of contributing to the improvement of living conditions by improving sustainable agricultural production of high value crops while reducing land degradation. There are two main themes: (I) the collection, selection and evaluation of new drough tolerant fruit trees (especially Ziziphus) for Southern Africa. This will involve the selection of promising Ziziphus mauritiana clones from India, introduction to Zimbabwe, and propagation for evaluation trials in contrasting climatic zones which will assess performance and suitability for rainfed cultivation as well as fruit nutritional quality and acceptability. Existing mature trees of Ziziphus and of other native fruit trees of zimbabwe will also be identified for preliminary performance evaluation. (II) the improvement of understanding of drought adaptation mechanisms in fruit trees and the development of selection criteria for semi-arid areas. Developmental, physiological and biochemical drought adaptation mechanisms will be assessed in field experiments in India and Zimbabwe, and using glasshouse studies. Based on the results of previous studies, including an STD2 project (TS2.0121.M(H)) emphasis would be on genetic comparisons of canopy development and water relations, productivity and photoprotection, and osmotic adjustment with the aim of combining into an integrative model for predicting optimum genotypes for a given environment. A four-year project is proposed because of the need to select and then propagate material before detailed evaluation. The project is largely with field-based close collaboration between complementary research groups. The zimbabwe groups have good field facilities and expertise in physiology and agronomy of fruit under tropical conditions, the Indians have experience with Ziziphus in field studies of photosynthesis and antioxidants the Germans have particular biochemical expertise, and the UK group has expertise in crop physiology and modelling and in propagation and field experience with fruit:crops, including ziziphus. The programme emphasises exchanges between laboratories, both of students and senior scientists and joint involvement in multidisciplinary field trials.
