Institutional adjustment for sustainable development strategies

Objetivo

The objective of this research is to analyze national responses to the request from the Rio Conference -UNCED- and from the UN Commission on Sustainable Development for long term sustainable development strategies at local, national and regional/European levels.

This research covers the response of five nations, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Greece and Portugal. It also covers the European Union's institutions to allow an analysis of the relations between EU, national and local levels in developing sustainable development strategies.

The research has the following components :

i) the examination of policy and organisational changes adopted to meet the needs of sustainable development strategies, and also of the changes at local government level to promote local Agenda 21s;

ii) a critical analysis of the strategies themselves as they emerge at national and local levels and detailed assessments of changes in policy coordination, interdepartmental arrangements and the shifts in economic thinking which have a bearing upon those strategies;

iii) the identification of potential for integration of environmental, economic and social policies as a long term objective to the achievement of sustainable development; in particular, within the context of policies aimed at implementing Agenda 21, it is examined the changing relationship between social policies dealing with employment, health, education, and care for these less advantaged in society as well as environmental and economic concerns.
