Development of new technics for waste water disinfection

Objectif

The overall objective is to develop new process for municipal waste water disinfection.

The expected achievements of this project are :

Task 1 : Disinfection processes and efficiency : to optimize disinfection processes using U.V. ozone, peracetic acid (determination of optimal dose, production of harmful by-products, regrowth and virulence after disinfection, bacterial resistance mechanisms).

Task 2 : Development of rapid and specific techniques to test disinfection efficiency : specific enzymatic activity for faecal coliform recovery and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to recover viruses.

Task 3 : Micro-economic evaluation : Determination of disinfection cost for tested agents.

Task 4 : Implementing a selected disinfection process : concept adapted to coastal areas : concept, design and operational studies, economic cost.

Task 5 : Recommendations for disinfection processes respecting EEC microbiological standards (for shellfishing and bathing areas), to reduce sanitary risks and increase reuse of receiving waters.
