Objective A: Modelling climate-growth relations based on the analysis of intra-and interannual variations in cell structures, density profiles and isotope ratios in tree-rings of Picea abies (L.) Karst, Abies alba Mill., Fagus sylvatica L., Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. and Quercus robur L.B: Comparison of climate-growth relations: The regional comparison between different bioclimatic regions includes the analysis of climate-growth relations along ecological gradients along the central European east-west transect: Black-Forest - Vosges Mountains - Lorrain Plain.C: Long-term retrospective analysis of the constancy of climate-growth relations over time and model based assessment of possible impacts of climate change on growth of the five tree species.Tree rings are used as indicators of recent and past changes of environmental conditions. They allow deep insight into past growth reactions. Combination of alternative tree ring analysis methods will improve diagnostic capabilities, leading to a better understanding and to more reliable interpretations of climate-growth relations. The regional comparison of climate-growth relations along the suggested central european east-west transect will give a rather broad and exhaustive view of the growth reactions of five important european tree species under different bioclimatic conditions.
