Objective To investigate aerosol formation in clouds, the effects ofaerosols on cloud microphysics, and the implications for therepresentation of cloud processes in climate models. The Great Dun Fell cap cloud will be used as a Natural Flowthrough reactor in a novel experiment to increase ourunderstanding of the interaction between aerosol, clouds andcloud chemistry. The flow through reactor results in a muchbetter characterised system than has been possible in the past. The specific research items are:Investigation of the relationship between the gas phaseprecursors and the development of hygroscopic aerosol particlesdue to chemical processes in and near cloud.Study the effects of passing through a cloud system on theatmospheric aerosol size distribution and optical properties.Determination and quantification of the factors controlling thescavenging of particles in the cloud and investigation thedroplet growth process and how it depends on the originalparticle size and composition.Exploration of the results from the above itemsfor atmospheric modelling of climate change with particularemphasis on regional scale aerosol climate forcing caused byEuropean emissions of sulphur and nitrogen species.Investigation of factors influencing the lifetime of ammonia inthe atmosphere as the air is involved in cloud formation. The experiment will bring together detailed measurements of cloudphysics and atmospheric chemistry using state of the artequipment with aerosol measurements using novel techniques andvery new instrumentation. The results of the field experimentwill be directly incorporated into a recently developed regionalmodel to assess the impact of the processes discovered.
