Reclamation of Mediterranean ecosystems affected by wildfires

Obiettivo

To develop techniques for the reclamation of degraded lands in
the European Mediterranean Countries.

The techniques considered include: 1) Management techniques on
shrublands and forests with high wildfire risk, and 2)
Reclamation programmes through native plant species selection,
and planting and seeding techniques analysis, according to the
field environmental conditions and the degradation stage of the
ecosystem.

Field experimentation will be extended from semi-arid to subhumid
mediterranean climate in the regions of Valencia (E Spain) and
Chalkidiki (N Greece).

In areas with high erosion risk, seeding herbaceous and shrub
plant species with soil amendments will be tested in field plots.
The techniques will be evaluated through plant growth, physical
soil properties and erosion and runoff. The biology of
Brachypodium retusum will be especially investigated and the
nursery techniques developed for semi-arid lands reclamation.

Canopy structure effects on runoff and sediment yield will be
analyzed comparing shrublands and pine forests. In connection
with these studies, clearing experiments will be performed on the
widespread shrublands dominated by Ulex parviflorus, for fuel
control and to reduce competition from this species.

Sprouting shrubs and trees will be planted to improve the
resilience of burned areas, in relation to soil type and climate.
The previous experience already available in Spain will be
completed by the installation of field plots in Greece. Specific
research will be carried out on the ecophysiology of Quercus ilex
ssp. rotundifolia (holm oak), Q. coccifera and Pistacia lentiscus
seedlings to explain their comparative behaviour in the field and
to improve the nursery and plantation techniques. The selective
thinning of holm oak coppices to promote tree structure will be
applied in Spain and Greece plots.

The effects of grazing on the post-fire revegetationn dynamics
will be studied in Greece. From these results, management
prescriptions will be developed.
