Turbulent mixing and flame extinction in flames stabilised by recirculatingzones

Objetivo

This project is aimed to improve understanding of recirculating reacting flows with emphasis on the complex effects of the mean pressure gradient, associated with streamline curvature, on mixing. A range of instrumentation based upon laser-light scattering techniques complemented by probe methods will be used to quantity the effects of heat release on turbulent mixing and to extend knowledge of extinction processes in premixed and non-premixed flames stabilised in recirculation zones. In addition, a novel mathematical formalism incorporating second-order closures and a stretched laminar flamelet chemistry model, together with a probabilistic approach, will be developed and used to improve knowledge of the interaction between turbulence and flame chemistry and to allow the prediction of flame chemistry and to allow the prediction of flame extinction processes.
