Research and intercomparison tests necessary for the harmonisation of standards on geotextiles

Objectif

Geotextiles are polymeric products used in civil engineering for filtration, separation, drainage and soil reinforcement, where they have provided solutions to many previously insoluble problems. Lack of harmonised standards and classification systems have been identified as causing over 40% of the problems related to exporting these materials.

The project aims therefore at the improvement of test methods being performed by CEN TC189 to fulfil the proposed mandate under the Construction Products Directive with regard to geotextiles. 14 tests are included in the mandate application as being essential for the CE mark. Of these 14, work on nine have identified problems that can only be solved by experimental testing, ranging from research on completely new methods to intercomparison of existing methods in order to provide a scientific basis for selecting only one and to establish their applicability to a wider range of materials. Some accelerated durability tests require validation for longer times under more normal conditions.

The methods requiring support are: tensile creep, compressive creep, friction, permeability, transmissivity, filtration opening size, weathering, chemical resistance and soil burial.

The objective of the project is in each case to provide a recommendation for a new or revised standard for adoption as a European Standard (EN).
