Obiettivo A methodology has been developed for the evaluation and the optimization of the efficiency of rock mass blasting. The evaluation of fragmentation was based on the comparison of the block size distribution curves of the in situ rock mass and the resulting blasted down material. The block size distribution was estimated from a 3-dimensional simulation of the discontinuities of the rock mass in situ. The simulation was based on a thorough statistical analysis of the rock mass characteristics, particularly the discontinuities intersecting it. The muck pile block size distribution, on the other hand, was estimated by image analysis of randomly taken photos. The analysis of the results and of the blasting parameters employed aids in identifying those crucial blasting parameters that could be modified to obtain the desired fragmentation. About 35 blasts were done in 2 mines located in Spain, with results concerning mainly qualitative and quantitative relationships between blasting parameters and the resulting fragmentation, obtained with the help of statistical methods such as principal component and discriminant analyses. These relationships were found reliable by applying them successfully to other mines. The methodology can be used for the following: to improve fragmentation in the studied mines; to demonstrate relationships between parameters and more particularly the influence of initial rock mass blockometry; to point out the parameters having the greatest influence on fragmentation by blasting; to formulate quantitative relations between the blasting parameters and the fragmentation results; to prove the efficiency and reliability of the global methodology used to optimize the fragmentation by blasting as a function of the blasting and of the rock mass parameters. This was ascertained by a successful application of the quantitative relationships found in this study to other mines.
