The acoustic emission technique must register a response from the rock which is consistent with the progress of the excavations and the actual stability observed. Phase 2 is the evaluation of the local stability in 5 stages. Geotechnical characterization of the rockmass. Evaluation of fracturing using photoanalysis and radar techniques. The systems developed must rapidly obtain reliable data on the spatial development of the discontinuities in the rock. Integration of the rock mass data by computer. The task will be to represent, using a computer with sophisticated graphics, the spatial distribution of the discontinuities, determining the typology of unstable blocks. Development of a calculation model (3-dimensional block theory) to optimize the density of the cables. The model should be able to handle all data obtained from measurements and tests and calculate the behaviour of the rock before and after the installation of the supporting system. Development of an integrated computerized system designed to function with minimum human intervention to assure local stability. In phase 3, the systems developed for the evaluation of the overall and the local stability will be installed in the mine for the final test and the final adjustments. Phase 4 is the final joint report.
