MODELLING CLIMATE VARIABILITY ON INTERANNUAL TIMESCALE

Obiettivo


TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICS OF CLIMATE VARIATIONS ON INTERANNUAL TIMESCALES.


ENSO
WE WILL PERFORM UNCOUPLED MODEL RUNS WITH A MULTI-LAYER, FULLY NON-LINEAR, PRIMITIVE EQUATION MODEL FOR THE EQUATORIAL PACIFIC, FORCED BY OBSERVED WINDS, TO STUDY THE CLIMATOLOGY OF THE OCEAN DYNAMICS. BOTH THE YEARLY MEAN STATE AND THE SEASONAL VARIATIONS WILL BE SIMULATED.
IN ADDITION WE WILL TRY TO REPRODUCE THE OCEAN'S RESPONSE DURING THE '82-'83 ENSO EVENT.

COUPLED MODEL RUNS WILL BE MADE WITH BOTH AN IDEALIZED, TWO-LAYER REDUCED GRAVITY MODEL AND THE FULL PRIMITIVE EQUATION MODEL OF THE OCEAN, COUPLED TO A MULTILAYER, LINEARIZED, STEADY-STATE, ANOMALY GCM FOR THE ATMOSPHERE. SIMILAR EXPERIMENTS WILL BE UNDERTAKEN USING BOTH THESE COUPLED MODELS. THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE COMPLEX MODEL CAN THEN BE INTERPRETED, GUIDED BY THE PHYSICAL UNDERSTANDING OBTAINED FROM THE SIMPLE MODEL RUNS.
IN PARTICULAR THE NATURE AND TIMESCALE OF THE LARGE SCALE UNSTABLE MODES IN THE COUPLED SYSTEM AND THEIR DEPENDENCE ON (PARAMETERIZATION OF) THE AIR-SEA INTERACTION AS WELL AS ON THE INITIAL STATE OF THE OCEAN WILL BE INVESTIGATED.

THE DYNAMICS OF HIGH-LATITUDE OCEANS WILL BE STUDIED USING A LAYERED OCEAN GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL. AS THIS MODEL HAS THE NOVEL APPROACH OF AN ISOPYCNAL, QUASI- LAGRANGIAN VERTICAL COORDINATE, BASIC QUESTIONS CONCERNIG THE MODEL'S ARCHITECTURE AND COMPARISON WITH EXISTING MODELS MUST BE ADDRESSED. WE WILL SIMULATE THE CLIMATOLOGY USING OBSERVED WINDS AND INVESTIGATE THE SENSITIVITY TO CHANGES IN THE FORCING, E.G. LOCATION OF ICE EDGE OR OCEANIC POLAR FRONT.

PHYSICAL MECHANISMS RELEVANT TO THE HIGH LATITUDE OCEANS THAT WILL BE STUDIED AND PARAMETERIZED IN THE SIMULATIONS, INCLUDE OCEAN MIXING AND DIFFUSION IN THE PRESENCE OF INCLINED DENSITY SURFACES, AS WELL AS THE PRECONDITIONING OF SURFACE WATERS (PRIOR TO THE FORMATION OF INTERMEDIATE AND DEEP WATER MASSES) BY AIR-SEA AND SEA-ICE INTERACTIONS.
THE SENSITIVITY OF THE OCEAN DYNAMICS ON AN INTERANNUAL TIMESCALE TO (PARAMETERIZATIONS OF) THESE PROCESSES WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON OF MODEL RUNS WITH DIFFERENT SIMULATED PHYSICS.
