ENERGY PRODUCTION PLANT FROM BIOMASSES

Objective

NON-POLLUTING PLANT FOR ELECTRIC AND THERMAL ENERGY PRODUCTION FROM BIOMASSES, in particular: hazelnut shells, olive exhaust husks, fruit seeds, pine cone and seed wastes, and other fruit processing wastes.
The project includes the design, engineering, construction and commissioning of the complete power station, consisting of biomass storage yard and handling facilities; steam boiler and fume treatment; turbo-generator and steam condenser; electric transformer house and power connection system to the national electrical network (ENEL); condenser water cooling system and waste heat draw-up for third party's utilization (greenhouses, etc.) ashes recovery and shipping unit; ancillary plants.
Electric energy production: 70,000,000 kWh/totally sold to ENEL and corresponding to 16,280 TOE saved.
Waste heat available about 200.000.000 kcal/y in the form of warm water at 40°C.

Actual results are not yet consolidated as the plant is still in the stage of adjustement and commissioning. At this very moment only the expected targets, described in our application to Thermie, are available.
Presently the start-up phase of the plant is complete and it is in progress the commissioning, consequently all the thermal and electric parameters are under test as for the fuel combustion tests, in order to reach high performances and good caracteristics of emissions, for a wide range of fuels mix. All complying with values expected in the original design.
1. INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
The innovative content of the project concerns the utilization of agricultural waste biomasses in a non-polluting thermoelectric power station fully devoted to the production of El. Energy for ENEL, at zero CO2 balance; making furthermore available waste heat, in the form of warm water, to third parties for agricultural purposes (greenhouses) or other possible purposes (aquaculture, swimming pool, etc.).
Said innovative content is spread over; the design and engineering particularly fit for the purpose; the biomass storage and handling; the thermal cycle (feeder, grate, boiler, gas treatment and ash collection); the operating and control system and the setting-up of the palnt in full respect of the environment.
Monitoring and dissemination of the results achieved after the start-up of the plant will ensure the availability of the innovation through the SESAME Project.
2. THE CONTEXT IN WHICH THE TECHNOLOGY IS OPERATING
The plant is located in the Center-South of Italy in a basin where most of the biomasses utilized are produced.
The location within said basin ensures the project the most economical transport conditions of the fueling biomasses, simultaneously avoiding the necessity of disposal of said biomasses to landfill, with evident environment advantages.
3. ECONOMIC ASPECT OF THE TECHNOLOGY, I.E. OVERCOST COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL EQUIPMENT, COST OF ENERGY PRODUCED IF APPROPRIATE
Italian laws n.9 and 10 of 1991 allow ENEL to pay a remunerative price to national producers for the electric energy produced from renewable resources (like biomasses) in non-polluting plants.
The ENERGONUT plant fully complies with the requirements of the above laws and will therefore benefit by the subject remunerative price for the electric energy produced by it and sold to ENEL.
The electric energy price fully covers all the production costs of the plant, including the cost of production of the warm water for agricultural and/or civil purposes.
4. MONITORING, IF OF PARTICULAR NOTE
Monitoring of the subject project, when in industrial operation, shall become of particular note as concerns the results obtainable by the technology adopted in terms of biomass storing and handling, non-polluting exhaust fumes, high thermo-electric efficiency (yield), no contribution to the "greenhouse effect" in the atmosphere.
