EFFECTIVE WELL ISOLATION FOR ABANDONMENT

Cel

The object of this project is to demonstrate a technique which has been developed as follows :
- Effectively seal all casing annuli without the need to remove any of the casing strings.
- Perform the technique quickly and in a single run into the well.
- For subsea wells show that the technique must be possible from a vessel without a derrick and associated pipe handling facilities.
- Demonstrate that the operation from a platform will be possible from the weather deck.
- Demonstrate that the technique meets the most stringent legal and environmental requirements.
- Disseminate this innovative technique to the global oil industry.L%
Successfully demonstrated technique on UK land well, results proved very encouraging, quantified financial savings and have preparing a detailed business plan for the commercialisation of the technique.
When production from a well drops below an economic level, the well may undergo various treatments; stimulation, work over or be subject to secondary and/or tertiary recovery techniques. However, the well will eventually require abandoning when it is no longer economic. Oil companies traditionally accrue for the eventual abandonment of wells. But costs of abandonment have soared due to inflation, and higer costs of meeting stricter statutory environmental requirements.
Current techniques involve plugging each of the casings in a large number of sequential steps, then removing the casing. It requires the mobilisation of a rig and associated equipment to remove the casing from the well. A large cement plug is then placed to finally seal the well.
The cost of the currently employed techniques are prohibitively high with operators often budgeting up to UKL 1,000,000.00 for abandonment costs.
A consequence of these high costs has been some operators to look at cheaper methods. Howeveruntil now no cost effective method which can guarantee the long term safety of the abandoned well has been developed. The technique proposed in this project will maintain or enhance the quality and long term safety of the sealing of the casing annuli, at greatly reduced cost, therefore improving the cost of well abandonment.
The philosophy employed in this project is to control the placement of the cement in the annuli by establishing circulation of fluid in all annuli.
The greatest assistance to oil companies can be given in the case of offshore wells where logistics and the addressing of environmental issues is more expensive, although the techniques developed can be equally applied to land operations.
In the case of offshore operations there are several possibilities;
1) A large platform with a certified working derrick.
2) A platform with an uncertified derrick or no derrick whatsoever.
3) A subsea well.
For the latter two cases, to seal all the casing annuli, would require the mobilisation of a rig, together with its associated equipment. The method of abandoning which is presently performed does not ensure a long term high quality seal of all the casing annuli. The technique provides three distinct benefits. Improved economics for abandonment operations. No rig is now needed to complete the abandonment procedure. Simultaneously savings are made in both time and materials. This has lead to estimated cost savings of around 40% dependent on environment. Reduces operational risk. It is no longer necessary to remove the tubulars from the well in order to secure a safe abandonment procedure. Consequently, the operational risks are reduced significantly through all stages from removal to transport to disposal. It should also be noted that in many cases of North Sea well abandonment, low scale activity (LSA) remains on the tubings. These must subsequently be disposed of by a specialist contractor.
