Technical and Economic Assessment of the Refurbishment of School Buildings for Energy Efficiency and Improvement of Thermal and Visual Comfort Conditions

Objective

The project aims at providing technically feasible and economically viable solutions for the refurbishment of school buildings in order to reduce energyconsumption and improve both thermal and visual comfort conditions.
Reduction of conventional energy and environmental pollutants produced from the burning of oil.
Upgarding the thermal and visual comfort conditions in the classrooms.
Considerable reduction of the running cosys of schools.
Dissemination of the use of energy conservation strategies and passive heating and cooling techniques.
Education of young students.
The methodology employed in this project will follow the principles of analysis and evaluation of subjects from different disciplines, allowing separate conclusions to be drawn.
The subjects to be investigated are the following:
- Architectural potential for incorporating onto the building envelope, energy conservation techniques and passive heating and cooling technologies, with regards to the optimisation of aesthetic, functional, and constructional considerations.
- Climate, site and lot configurations.
- Thermal efficiency and year round thermal and visual comfort.
- Economic viability of the energy design.
The conclusions will then grouped, codified and synthesised, when possible to reconcile them, or rejected if completely contradictory. This process will run throughout the entire project so that final propositions for school refurbishment will be fully substantiated.
The tasks to be carried out are:
1. Collection of data and compilation of primary material
2. Pre-selection of energy conservation techniques, systems and technologies.
3. Development of solutions.
4. Economic evaluation.
5. Demonstrationof the results via the redesign of school buildings
6. Design guideline development.
7. Dissemination of results.
