Energy labelling of supermarket refridgerated cabinets

Objetivo

To provide a basis for energy labelling of cabinets, that is technically sound and agreed upon by the industry.
As a result of the project, a categorization of display cases will be given. Also, reference energy consumption lines (efficiency lines) will be defined in each category. Categorization and reference lines will be formulated in cooperation with the display case manufacturing industry.
About 60% of the electricity consumption in modern supermarkets is used by display cabinets for frozen and refrigerated foodstuffs. Lack of information on energy use, especially in relation to market averages, prohibits the making of energy conscious choices for new equipment and energy saving in this field in general.
The Standard Product Information (SPI) of refrigerated cabinets is not a sufficient base for comparing the energy use of different cabinets, and it does not give an indication of the energy use of a specific cabinet in relation to the market average. Therefore, an energy conscious choose for a new cabinet cannot be made at the moment, even when the client would like to do so.
A study performed by TNO considering fresh meat display cases, shows that it is possible to select existing display cases, that use 20% less energy than the current average consumption (figure 1).
Energy labeling of display cases can be undertaken only when there is a definition of the functional quantity of the display cases (e.g. display area, volume, temperature). Only than can be energy consumption be expressed as energy use per functional unit.
The objective of the study will be to define a categorization of display cases and to define functional quantities per category. Both the categorization and the definition of functionality should be set up in cooperation with the European display case manufacturers.
As a starting point the categorization as defined by TNO can be used, and be commented upon by the manufacturers. The definition of functionality can, in the case of fresh meat display cases, be taken from the work performed by TNO. For other categoris of display cabinets, definitions of functionality have to be prepared.
Once categorization and functionality are defined, a proposal will be made for energy labeling of refrigerated display cases. This proposal will be based upon the labeling scheme for domestic appliances, as currently prepared by DG XVII of the EC.
