Obiettivo Twin roll strip casting technology is of great interest to the world's major steel producers because of the possibility of reducing or even eliminating the hot rolling stage, the potential of flexible manufacturing systems to cast smaller quantities of special steels, as well as the lower capital investment necessary for the plant. One of the critical aspects of the strip casting process concerns the liquid steel lateral containment system. The general objective of this research programme is the design, construction and trial of an economic mechanical lateral sealing system which would permit casting of a reasonable duration without introducing significant defects into the steel strip due to the side plates.
