Objetivo The aim of this research project is to develop a new strategy for eliminating chatter, which will concentrate on developing a better understanding of the dynamic behaviour of the mill under operating conditions in order to generate on-line models rather than static modal models as currently available. This will be achieved by developing realistic models for the operational dynamic behaviour of the mill structure based on live modelling, a control strategy that will provide better control of the chatter problems, and examination of reduced chatter designs for mills. The project results should enable confident operation despite proximity of chatter frequencies through control based on on- line models, combined with improved design giving lower likelihood of chatter.
