The main objective of the project is to establish the criteria that are needed to design lightweight welded constructions subject to high and variable stress peaks using new classes of high strength steels.
Within this context it is necessary to establish an investigation programme based on comparative testing of medium and high strength steel, distinguishing between crack initiation and crack propagation, to calculate stress concentrations for different joint types and to produce the results in the form of design codes.
