European Consortium of Earthquake Shaking Tables - Bristol

Objetivo

Earthquakes do not recognise national and political boundaries. This is particularly true in Europe where major fault systems run through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary into Italy, Greece, Albania and former Yugoslavia. The continuity is tectonic, not political, and each of these countries has the same need for understanding the effects of earthquakes on both natural and man-made systems. The former because catastrophic landslips are caused by earthquakes and the latter because power stations (particularly nuclear), chemical plants, domestic dwellings, and the whole range of life-line systems must be designed and constructed to withstand all but the most extreme earthquake events. In view of this, it is regrettable, for well-known reasons, that the countries of Central and Eastern Europe have not kept pace with developments in seismic design and construction during the past 40 years. Particularly in the interface between design and construction there is a significant lack of the understanding now effective in W Europe, steming from centralised design, usually from Moscow, with actual construction left to local contractors, who have no understanding of the paramount need to resist the horizontal loads produced by earthquakes, in addition to the ever-present vertical loads produced by gravity. Many recent earthquakes have pointed to this deficiency.
This proposal, therefore, aims to use the four ECOEST shaking table laboratories as vehicles for up-grading the earthquake engineering knowledge of Central and E European enqineers who have not had access to shaking tables, nor, in many cases, to the results of recent research outside their own countries. In particular, since ECOEST is very much involved in pre-normative research for Eurocode 8, these engineers will be quickly brought up-to-date. As will be seen from their applications, they have each made specific proposals for research which requires use of the shaking tables which ECOEST provides.
