Obiettivo One of the principal means of ensuring world-wide participation in the Human Genome Project, and of co-ordinating the effort, has been the organisation of Single Chromosome Workshops (SCWs). At each SCW, participants update the genetic and physical maps relating to a specific chromosome, resolve inconsistencies between data sets and arrange collaborations including the sharing of materials. An important feature is submission of data to the Genome Database (GDB) which is the primary database for human genome mapping data. The current contract provides - through HUGO - core funding for SCWs held in the EU and travel costs for European scientists attending SCWs elsewhere. The costs of participation in SCWs are borne by a variety of funding agencies, which have agreed to apply a general formula to this support, viz. all local costs are borne by the host country and the other agencies support the travel costs of each of their scientists. This "concordat" does not cover the Russian human genome programme which is a substantial mapping effort on chromosomes 3,5,13, and 19, and co-ordinates the genome research of some 130 scientists from 15 institutions. Informatics support for the programme comes from the HUGO Moscow Informatics Centre which currently has great difficulty in accessing GDB and hence the latest genome data. The net effect is that the Russian contribution to the global genome effort cannot be made in a timely fashion (and perhaps not at all) and that their own programme also suffers from their inability to access, and exchange, data and materials. The purpose of the present proposal is to make available to the global genome effort the results of the Russian Human Genome programme by: - providing travel costs to enable scientists from the Russian programme to attend SCWs - upgrading the service of the HUGO Moscow Informatics Centre to allow provision of GDB on-line.
